There could be a reasonable argument made for not updating them, except on the the deveopment version. If the idea is to have a range of different systems to test Sage on, then I think it would be best if they did not all have the same patches. Obviously if there were specific patches needed to build Sage, that would be desirable to have them. If a record was kept of exactly what updates were applied, and what were necessary, it would be possible to say to someone "You need patches X, Y and Z".
