All right, I figured it out.
It was my ~/.pydistutils.cfg that interfered with the installation. 
So python libraries were not installed in the sage tree.
However, shouldn't that be documented or dealt with?

In fact, there is also a quite old ticket on that one in trac: 
http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/5961
