It was probably because of some memory issues. An error page for yesterday's problems would probably have said something like "the server is down for unknown reasons"---would that be particularly helpful?
Also, my previous email was probably too brief. I've put up these instructions for setting up a Sage server: http://wiki.sagemath.org/SageServer. I hope they are helpful if you decide to set up a server.
