The basic idea is great, but you propose :arxiv: and :doi:, now someone proposes :msn: ; perhaps one could also think about :numdam: ...

Is it possible to have nested roles? I'm thinking about something like :article:arxiv:`...`, :article:doi:`...`, etc

That would make it easier to add new types of references, should the need arise.
