Is it? Doesn't seem to be working on OSX 10.4, say. The real bug is still that we are using LD_LIBRARY_PATH instead of setting rpaths. It just a bad idea... How about this: I'll add to the compiler wrapper a setting to remove LD_LIBRARY_PATH before calling the host gcc.
