My point was:

(1) sage uses ECL for some things ;
(2) sage doesn't want ECL with threading enabled ;
(3) instead of using the api call to disable threading (a one-liner!),
the spkg had a patch to disable threading in the sage-compiled ecl
(using the past since I think that's now done correctly... or did I
still not find the time to push it? Sigh...).

It's not clear to me what your point about the scope of sage vs an
embedded lisp interpreter was.
