What about doing tail `grep -i 'error\|fail' logfile` after a crash automatically?
? Well, that's what we currently do (on a per-package logfile basis), and this meanwhile works for almost all packages (apparently even ATLAS ;-) ), but AFAICS currently e.g. not for "special packages" like the Sage library (csage and the extension modules).
Still, the message is IMHO misleading in two ways: It speaks of "the [Sage] build directory" (singular) instead of (temporary) build directories (plural) belonging to (only) the failing packages (i.e., the directories to be kept/deleted are specific to these). Moreover, the advise on setting SAGE_KEEP_BUILT_SPKGS (its name being quite misleading to ordinary users as well) doesn't state that the variable has to be exported, and the advise is given regardless of its current setting.
(To the time we introduced SAGE_KEEP_BUILT_SPKGS, it was meant for internal / developer use, but now, years later, it gets exposed to users, to whom its meaning won't be obvious.)
