I was also talking about my laptop, and it has pretty much identical specs except 32GB ram. But then everything should still comfortably fit into 8GB, so I don't believe that this is the reason for why your system is so slow. I'm using btrfs but then ext4 is probably still a tad faster, I just like to live dangerously ;-) Which Ubuntu version, and/or which mount options? Ubuntu doesn't use atime any more, I hope... It might also be a slow SSD, just because its solid state doesn't necessarily mean that its fast. There are plenty of crappy ones.
