I totally agree with you on this respect. The documentation that Jori wanted to write totally fits with your example: there is a class that we did not write ourselves and that we do not understand totally (even after working on it), and it seemed adequate to "take notes" about what we know of the implementation. For ourselves in the future, and for others. Perhaps that meant as Volker said that "the code should have been written differently from the start", and in order to rewrite it one needs first to understand what it does.
