Just for the record, this also breaks introspection in the
IPython terminal and notebooks:

    sage: sage: m = matrix([[1,1],[2,2]])
    sage: sage: m.*rank*?
    ...
    ZeroDivisionError

which has been annoying me for a while. Thanks for bringing this up!
