If you add a nice comment explaining how to do this to you issue, then
this would seem to me to reasonably address Jereon's primary
objection.

I didn't look, but you could also address the "it looks ugly to some
people" objection with a comment as well (or maybe just a link to this
thread...).

(Replacing dozens of identical copy/pasted lines by
a single line to generate them greatly *reduces* the chances of stupid
bugs, so +1 to this change from me...)
