Subject: [sage-devel] Sage as a language option on Project Euler
To: sage-devel <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi all,

projecteuler.net is a fun site that lists over 200 interesting
computational math problems and allows registered members to check and
post their solutions. Member-profiles include information on what
computer language the member prefers to use for the solutions, and the
list of available language choices is quite extensive.

I recently requested that Sage be available as a language option, and
it has now been added to the site (see
http://forum.projecteuler.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1097&sid=1c0656df923f6d46a5691151c63acb48
)

According to the Statistics webpage
http://projecteuler.net/index.php?section=statistics
Matlab, Mathematica and Maple are the languages of choice for 304, 258
and 66 members respectively, while Python is second (chosen by 3484
members) after c/c++ (chosen by 4189 members).

Solutions to these problems could be interesting benchmarks for
comparing Sage with some of its competitors (e.g. regarding runtime as
well as simplicity and expressivity). Challenging students to solve
these problems with Sage is also a neat way to get them involved with
some nontrivial algorithmic issues, although several problems are
rather easy to solve with a mathematical system like Sage.

(If you sign up at projecteuler.net and use Sage for some solutions,
be sure to select it as your language option.)

Apologies if this should rather have been posted somewhere else...
(please let me know where or repost).

Regards,
Peter
