First, if you have a computer lab, you can use NFS! It's maybe a bit slower on startup, but should work quite well. The reason is, that Sage itself is read only and therefore it's sufficient to install it on your NFS server and mount it into /usr/local/ ... this would also make updating very easy! Have you tried that? Second, splitting Sage is not trivial. The best I know about is Mandriva Linux. One of their developers (or a developer) has done this big task for Sage 4.1 and it will be available in Mandriva 2010.
