This sounds like a general Python question. The first thought that springs to my mind is to use the try-except clause for handling exceptions: http://docs.python.org/tutorial/errors.html Maybe there are better ways though.
FYI, this is really a list for teachers to discuss ways to use Sage, not for general "support" questions. The list sage-support is better suited for that purpose.
