Hi all!

I'll be teaching a masters module on computational commutative algebra
next semester, and of course I plan to use Sage.

I am now seeking some advice for setting up a notebook server for my
students. I found http://wiki.sagemath.org/SageServer and
http://wiki.sagemath.org/SageVirtualBox. Are there further resources
that will teach me how to set up a server? Is Virtual Box relevant if
one has a linux machine?

If you (a) have an entire machine dedicated to the Sage server, and are okay with rebuilding the machine if something malicious happens, or (b) trust the students enough that you would give them accounts on the machine anyway, then no, you don't need VirtualBox (and in fact, I believe it will be faster if you don't use it).

Please, please document what you do and add to the SageServer web page!

Dan Drake also has a page from a while ago: http://wiki.sagemath.org/DanDrake/JustEnoughSageServer

I plan to use a machine of the following specifications:
  Linux 2.6.26-2-amd64 (Debian GNU/Linux 5.0)
  8 times Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5440 @ 2.83GHz
  MemTotal: 16472532 kB

Do you think this is enough for 5 to 10 students?

That sounds like it should be plenty, but of course it depends on what each student plans on utilizing!

Thanks,

Jason
