Well... I would say it corresponds more closely to the US professional degree college, except with higher academic standards. Note that this one has already switched to the Bachelor's/Master's system - I suppose hardly any have the Diplom anymore. US community colleges serve a valuable role here, but most students there would have ended up with "Mittlere Reife" in Germany, though now that is also going the way of the dinosaur.
