This sounds like the symptom we get when there are a very large number of users, hence processes, and the system isn't allowed to start anymore (e.g., can't allocate pseudotty's). Jason -- did you do anything before the restart to check on this, e.g, "./admin --status" or "ps -u sagenbws |wc -l"?
