Well, if someone already *has* Mma or Maple, they can still use the notebook functionality! Just make sure the notebook has access to Mma or Maple, and then choose them from the drop-down menu. Now students just need a web browser to use them. Warning: make sure you still obey all relevant licenses in this case. At least once I heard this would be against the license even on a local machine, not to speak of on a notebook server open to all on- campus IPs.
