I'd just like to point out that Wolfram Alpha can often show steps in
simple problems. For example, see:
http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=integrate+x%5E2*cos%28x%29
and click on "Show Steps" in the first output block.
I'm interested in the ideas on this thread. I don't know the best way
to go about things, and my contribution to the effort is working on the
Sage Cell server, which lets Sage basically be a web service. I hope,
for example, that with this would be easy to write a webwork problem
which generates data or checks answers using Sage functions. Webwork
can then call Sage to do backend work. Ted's ideas sound very
interesting too, and I'd be interested in giving feedback on such a system.
Thanks,
Jason
