Hi.

I asked questions about this many years ago and have not kept up with the
developments. However, searching around I see that the WebWork crew was at
Sage Edu 5 and so more work may be happening and I am hoping someone
reading this list knows what my best options might be. Ever since I left a
school that was using MapleTA I have been looking for an open source
(preferred) or at least not ridiculously expensive way to write my own
online quizzes that can process mathematical answers (for example
considering -3/2 x - 6 = y and -9/6(x+2) - 3 = y as both being correct
answers to the question asking for the equation of the line through the
points (-2,3) and (4,-6)) --- sage could easily test that the two equations
are mathematically the same --- or I think it could). For example, I have
often wondered about linking Moodle and Sage --- Moodle already has nice
course management set up and their general quiz capabilities are good, but
there is no way to process mathematical answers and, as noted above, I
think Sage could fill that void.

With my apologies to the WebWork folks, but that system is very difficult
to use for someone who wants to write their own questions rather than point
and click and select from their repository (I have tried). Unfortunately,
I am not aware of alternatives, but writing questions in Moodle is really
easy and if it was married to Sage so that answers can be processed, that
would be fabulous. Maybe someone knows of other options or knows how to
marry Moodle and Sage, or thinks this is a good idea? I don't have the
background to make it happen. I can only hope. (I only mention Moodle
because of personal experience and I know it is open source, or it was and
many other course management systems are not and what would be great is a
full course management system with the desired quiz/test capabilities).

Thanks,
Amelia
