I am a bit puzzled by this: on the same computer, *all* versions of Sage (including Sage 7.5 !) hang with ./sage -t --long --warn-long 49.8 src/sage/doctest/external.py while they used to succeed (I checked it in the logs of make ptestlong). There was no change in the system configuration though (last successfull make ptestlong, including src/sage/doctest/external.py, was for Sage 8.3.rc3 last week).
