For what it's worth, I use a free app from the MacOS app store called
Amphetamine:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/amphetamine/id937984704?mt=12

This makes it easy to make the laptop stay on indefinitely, even if
the lid is closed.  It works very robustly.
