Whenever I've found a way to do it in some system, I've made it the cputime() method of that system. If there is a system without a cputime() command that works, you could research into finding one for that system, and let me know. For example, Martin Albrecht really wanted a cputime() for Macaulay2, and couldn't find one. It turns out there isn't one!!! So we contacted one of the author of M2's language (Dan Grayson) to add one, and he very kindly added one (as of today), which will be in the next M2 package for SAGE.
