Another, possibly simpler, explanation is that this error

>> (-2, 'Name or service not known')

could be due to the file "/etc/services" being missing.  I'm not sure  
which code emits the error message, but it should be pretty easy to  
track down...and verifying the presence of the file is easy :-}
