Just out of curiosity do you prefer using SAGE via VMware to possibly
using it via cygwin? Also, did you find the size of the vmware download
to be a major problem or not?

None of those examples should work via the notebook. They are only for
running SAGE via Cygwin. Don't worry about that particular problem at all.
Anyway, it's much better to plot directly and not use maxima, as you've
done. We'll actually likely remove those examples, or at least make it much
clearer that they won't work via the Notebook.

(1) Type

  optional_packages()

for a list of packages.

(2)  Type
   install_package('exact package name')
to install an optional package.

Write back if you have problems with (1) or (2). Also, consider subscribing
to the sage-support mailing list, so you can ask your questions to a large
number of "highly trained volunteers":

Just out of curiosity how did you find out about SAGE?
