In 2.10.1:
plot(sqrt(1-x^2),(x,1,10)) - gives an "axes-only" plot
plot((1-x^2)^(0.5),(x,1,10)) - gives an error ("float unscriptable")
I agree that that last is sort of off the mark :-}
