Instead of removing it completely, how about just turning it off?
I.e., don't ask for an email on login, and don't send an email.

By the way, the confirmation email system isn't used now simply
because one year ago when we were writing the notebook we
implemented the minimum needed for the task at hand, and the
confirmation system just wasn't needed.   And we never got around
to finishing it.   It took *days* of hard work by Bobby Moretti
(and Yi Qiang) just to implement what's there right now.
It certainly shouldn't not be removed from the codebase -- that's silly.
