There are two likely culprits:

 (a) move $HOME/.ipythonrc out of the way. Newer ipython releases
modify that one and then old releases won't work any more
 (b) set DOT_SAGE to something else so that you start with a clean
environment. Having run very old sage releases (i.e. 1.0) with current
ones using the same DOT_SAGE causes trouble.
