The only problem I see with that is what if (as is often the case)
BOTH axes are not in the "usual" spot?  Then there is no way to
distinguish them.  Also this is a problem for visually impaired users
(and it doesn't take much visual impairment to make it a problem), not
to mention people who don't read the documentation i.e. all
students...

But that's just griping.  These are great ideas to build off of; any
other ideas on how to do this?  Dotted lines look like asymptotes,
unfortunately...

I think this is a good idea anyway, though it would probably be an
option in show() or something like that.
