Isn't sage meanwhile providing ecl?  That should be better than clisp, I
think.

In any case,

    sudo sage -i fricas-1.0.3.p0

is probably the best thing to try out fricas.  If you find fricas
useful, since you are using ubuntu I recommend that you install fricas
separately from sage (you will still be able to use it from within
sage), because fricas with clisp is *very* slow.

To get speed and fewer bugs fetch fricas-1.0.7.i386.tar.bz2 or
fricas-1.0.7.amd64.tar.bz2, depending on your computer's architecture
from

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/fricas/files/

These are binaries.  They will install into /usr/local/bin and
/usr/local/lib as follows:

    cd /
    sudo tar -xjf fricas-1.0.7.i386.tar.bz2
