nice+thx for this idea, i did the same on my machine using matlab
2009a (most recent i guess?)
sage: a = random_matrix(RDF,2000)
sage: timeit('a*a')
5 loops, best of 3: 3.28 s per loop
sage: b = matlab('rand(2000)')
sage: timeit('b*b')
5 loops, best of 3: 5.71 s per loop
sage: matlab_version()
'7.8.0.347 (R2009a)'
