That would be totally crazy. Yes agreed. But it's quite common for servers to *start* as root, then switch to another userid. A normal web server (Apache) must start as root, otherwise it could not listen on port 80. Clearly this is an advantage to Sage using 8000, as you do not need root access to listen on that port. One disadvantage of starting on port 8000 is that if there was an annoying little person with access to the system running Sage, he could write a simple program that opens on port 8000 and does nothing. That would stop Sage starting on port 8000. (Unless Sage beat him to get port 8000 that is!)
