Oddly enough, I am having the same problem.  (Yes, unless things
changed, you should be able to get 3D graphs from the command line.
It should open a new window.)  I used to be able to do it.

I can see the graphs in the notebook though...

I have sun-java6 installed (and that's the only "java"):

t60[~/work/comp]$ wajig list-installed sun
asunder
sun-java6-bin
sun-java6-fonts
sun-java6-jre
sun-java6-plugin

I am running sage 4.3 (32 bits - Ubuntu binary) on a Thinkpad T60
running sidux GNU/Linux.

I also don't need it right now, but just FYI....
