Just before things stopped working, I accidentally told Windows to shut down without first closing the VirtualBox window (thus allowing the VM to save state properly). I realized the mistake right away, stopped the shut down process, closed the VM and VirtualBox properly, and then shut down Windows. Everything continued to work correctly for a day or so, but then I started having problems.
zsharon suggested I backup all the "needed files" and just get a fresh VM image. But I don't know which files these are, or even how I would go about backing them up.
