Tried that just now.  Results:

About the initial error
("There is no spkg-install script, no setup.py, and no configure
script,
so I do not know how to install /usr/share/sage-4.3.3/spkg/standard/
gd-2.0.35.p4.spkg. ):

Doesn't that sound like the makefile is looking for something it's not
finding?
And so wouldn't it be that either A) the makefile is wrong
or B) something is missing from the SAGE .tar file?
