The message

"#error "LONG_BIT
definition appears wrong for platform (bad gcc/glibc config?)."

is a very common one with mixtures of 32-bit and 64-bit objects. I've
seen that many times trying to build Sage either 64-bit on Solaris 10
or 64-bit on OpenSolaris.

The other message that I see when on inadvertently tries to link
64-bit objects to a 32-bit library is "Wrong ELF Class". One gets the
same if you try to link 64-bit objects to a 32-bit library.

So if you ever see either of them, you know what the problem is.
