I'm probably hitting my head against a wall, but would it not be
better if the Sage project decided to actually *test* on certain
operating systems and versions before making a release? In other
words, we "support" Fedora versions 12 and 13 (for example), and never
release a version of Sage without confirmation it actually builds on
Fedora 12 and 13.

A couple of weeks ago I got an email from one of the MPFR developers
who said they were intending to make a new release and could they use
my HP-UX machine to test before making a release. I obliged and they
have confirmed MPFR will build on an old version of HP-UX.

In contrast. Sage is released without being tested on the latest
version of the second most popular linux distribution (if Wikipedia is
to be believed).

I'm not suggesting we hold up a release of Sage just because it does
not build on Fedora 13 which was released, but at least have a set of
distributions where we agree to test before releasing.

At the moment a Wiki page gets filled in with successful builds after
a release is made. IMHO it would be better to fill that in *before*
making the release.
