Dave, I think the key point is that there are clearly companies and

I agree lots of companies use Python for engineering.
But if that was the key point, it was not clear to me:
==============================================
Sage is not only good for mathematical research, but any scientific
and engineering research, just because of the huge number available
packages to use in python. I can't say I think the same is true with
mathematica.

Using Sage as a
student gives you exposure to python.
True.
I'm sure its technically
possible to use python within mathematica, but its not something you'd
naturally do. So I do think that is an important advantage to Sage
when choosing a system for education.
I think the fact Sage's programming language is common, is a good thing.
One thing I think is a *MUST* to do before giving a talk like this, is to do a
job search on monstir.com and similar sites and find all the jobs requiring
Mathematica skills. My guess is you will find less than half a dozen. Once I
looked, and the only job I see with Mathematica in the description was one
posted by Wolfram Research.
Then do a similar thing with Python, and see there are tons of jobs for python
programming.
Of course, it's also true that the jobs requiring Mathematica skills are likely
to be scientific than those for python skills - many of which are likely to be
web site design and other non-scientific skills.
If you do a job search on MATLAB or Labview, you will get tons of jobs, but
very few for Mathematica.
I believe if Mathematica was used as much in industry as Wolfram Research imply,
I think there would be a lot more jobs requiring skills in Mathematica.
Of course, you are unlikely to find any jobs needing skills in the Sage
mathematics software - only the accounting software.
IMHO, Python skills are more useful in the job market that Mathematica skills.
