The python modes for various editors should do a pretty good job.  I don't know 
how to set any of them up except emacs.

If sage-mode in emacs didn't work for you then most likely something wasn't set 
up correctly.  Have you used emacs before?  It can be quite tricky to get 
right, particularly if you are new to it.

Emacs has a fairly steep learning curve, but if you want some help setting it 
up I would be happy to help.  I assume you followed the instructions at 
http://wiki.sagemath.org/sage-mode ?

Until just now it wasn't clear that you had to replace $SAGE_ROOT and 
$SAGE_DATA with the respective paths.  This is just a wild guess, but it may 
have caused your problem.
