In my personal experience, I have been using Sage for more than a
year. I run it on Debian in VirtualBox on Windows XP, and there have
not been any problems with my setup.

If reducing or eliminating downtime is a high priority, I suggest
setting up a second, redundant machine, in case the primary machine
experiences problems.

+1 for installing directly on bare hardware.
