I opened the synaptic package manager in ubuntu, did a repository refresh, and then searched for gfortran. I installed the multilib and it seems to be working (the apt-get command didn't work).
The server_pool thing sounds like a nice feature, but I probably won't use it until I encounter issues. I only have a few people using the server right now but more could use it in the future.
