This is most likely a combination of missing fonts and the firefox security model not allowing access to Sage's copy of the fonts (http://docs.mathjax.org/en/v1.1-latest/installation.html#firefox-and-local-fonts). Apparently the stix fonts are only included from OS X 10.7 onward.
At http://www.mathjax.org/help/fonts/ there are detailed instructions for how to install stix fonts manually.
