It looks like matplotlib does not find numpy, altough this was built
successfully:

I get the same "broken pipe" error with r-2.15.2.p0.
Note that if I start a subshell (as suggested by the error message at the
end) and run "./spkg-install", configure and build of r-2.14.0.p6 works
fine. Thus is looks like not the spkg itself causes the problem, but rather
something in the sage install script, where the output of configure is
piped to!
