That is likely the problem. Your Windows email client may have converted
the line endings from LF to CRLF. Try resending it as a binary file, or
inside a zip file, or something like that.

Or open the transferred patch with 'vi' on the target Ubuntu system and look whether you see ^M's (carriage returns) at the end of each line. (If you're not familiar with 'vi', alternatively try "head filename.patch | hd" and look for '0d 0a's in the two middle columns, which is CR LF in hexadecimal notation.)
