sage: t = var('t', domain='complex')
sage: maxima(conjugate(t)), maxima(t)
outputs (_SAGE_VAR_t, _SAGE_VAR_t)
so basically conjugate(t) gets converted all wrong to maxima, or at
least that t is complex is instantly forgotten. Hmm.
