It's possible that the current virtual machine build is not.  Volker, is 
there some configuration thing that would tell you whether Vista is too old 
for your build?  

Alternately, there is a weird variable in your error message that Googling 
seems to indicate might sometimes be successfully worked around:

It may be a permissions problem of some kind.

I *can* confirm that I had a student use Sage via the virtual machine 
solution quite successfully (in fact we got a paper out of it) on Vista ... 
but five or six years ago!
