I'll withdraw this question. The home page for LIE http://wwwmathlabo.univ-poitiers.fr/~maavl/LiE/ links to a note on compiling LIE on a mac http://wwwmathlabo.univ-poitiers.fr/~maavl/LiE/MacOSX.html which makes it sound like too much trouble, especially in conjunction with the Sagemath spkg installer.
I now have the lie spkg installed on a Scientific Linux machine at work.
