Hi I have no idea how to solve this. If you create and log in as a different user, does it have the same problem?
(I can confirm my PPA installs do not show this error) It might also help to ask on an ipython list (but mention that you get this in sage). Or install ipython from ppa:jtaylor/ipython and test whether a plot does the same for you there.
