Have you instructions at https://github.com/sagemath/sagecell which were working a month or so ago? If something was unclear/not-working I definitely would try to help, ideally by clarifying those instructions. For production use VM scripts linked from there are actually used to deploy public instances and so are known/guaranteed to work on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Also, where are the ones that you have found?
