 Hm.  John, what bug exactly were you getting?  I just applied your
 sage-4249.patch to a clean build of sage-3.1.3 and it indeed gives me 21
 totally real quadratic extensions of Q(sqrt(5)) with discriminant <= 10^4.
 In particular, for this example the output of F.reduced_basis() does not
 seem to change after the patch, and so I would not expect anything to
 change.
